Special performance and masterclass by violinist Elly Suh

String Society 2014 is gearing up to be an amazing week of music at Dwight-Englewood.  Please join us in the Grand Finale Concert which will take place in Hajjar Auditorium on Friday, August 8th at 3:00.  The concert will feature the talented and accomplished string players in a string orchestra and also in chamber groups.

I am thrilled to announce that Elly Suh will be stopping by during String Society to treat the students to a solo violin performance and give a masterclass.  I met Elly when we both played in a concert with Metropolis Ensemble at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) a few years ago backing up Questlove.  We have since played together a few times with the East Coast Chamber Orchestra.

Join us in Hajjar Auditorium on Wednesday, August 6th at 1:45 for Elly's performance and masterclass.

Violinist Elly Suh, praised as “a sensitive and absorbing interpreter” (Musical America), is the 2nd Prize winner of the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition and 3rd Prize winner of the 2013 Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition. She has also received awards from the Society for Strings and the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, and has appeared on PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center and NPR’s From the Top. Ms. Suh has performed at the Pro Arte Musical "Young Virtuosos Series," the Atlantic Music Festival, Banff International Masterclasses, Chamber Music Workshop at the Perlman Music Program, the Taos School of Music, and the Meadowmount School of Music. As a member of the Northway Quintet, she received Silver Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. She also performs with the Grammy-nominated Metropolis Ensemble, recording with them for Naxos and Nonesuch Records, and has appeared as a guest artist with the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO), the Omega Ensemble, and the East Coast Contemporary Ensemble.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Ms. Suh began violin lessons at the age of 5 and entered the Juilliard Pre-college division at age 10. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and the Professional Studies Certificate from the Manhattan School of Music, where her teachers included Robert Mann, Joel Smirnoff, and Sally Thomas.

Happy June!

Conductor/Cellist Diego Garcia joins String Society faculty

We are thrilled to welcome Diego Garcia to the faculty of String Society 2012.  He will be conducting all of the ensembles this summer.  Read below to learn more about Mr. Garcia.

Cellist Diego Garcia has been on the cello and conducting faculty of the Eastman School of Music Pre-College Division since 2004. Currently the Music Director of the Eastman Youth Chamber Soloists and of the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Garcia is also a frequent guest conductor of both youth orchestras and professional orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, the Carribean, and South America including the Flanders Music Festival (Ghent Belgium), the Parnu City Symphony (Estonia). A prize-winner in the Carolina Oramas Competition, Mr. Garcia has been featured in numerous solo and chamber music performances in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and throughout South America and Europe. He has performed as Assistant Principal Cellist in the Santo Domingo Music Festival in 2001 and 2003, and as Principal Cellist of the Todi Music Festival in 2007. In addition to his work as a cellist and conductor, Mr. Garcia is also active as an arranger and composer. Mr. Garcia composed the original film score for "The Heart of Tango," which was performed by Gibbs & Main. His arrangements for the CD "Quartsemble: Tango" received rave reviews both locally and nationally. Most recently, Mr. Garcia composed Danzas Del Nuevo Mundo for Gibbs & Main. The work represents a fusion of his knowledge of folk and pop music from South America with a classical twist. Mr. Garcia holds a Bachelor's Degree in Cello Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and has twice received conducting fellowships to the Conductor's Institute at Bard College in 2005 and 2006.
